myGovID rebrands to myID: What you need to know

Posted on November 15th, 2024 by WLF

The Australian Government’s Digital ID app, myGovID, has officially rebranded to myID which began rolling out in app stores from November 13th, 2024.

Why the change?

It aims to reduce confusion between myGovID and myGov. The new name for the Australian Government Digital ID app reflects the community’s evolving understanding of Digital ID. It demonstrates how a whole-of-government ID provider can help protect Australians from identity theft and fraud.

What’s New?

While the app’s name and appearance have changed, the functionality remains the same. Users will continue to access over 150 government services using their existing login details. The transition is seamless, with no need to set up a new account or reconfirm identity details, your existing app should automatically update.

Security and Scams

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has warned users to be vigilant against scams during this transition period. Scammers may attempt to exploit the rebrand by creating fake websites or sending phishing emails. Users are advised to download the app only from official app stores and don’t click on suspicious links, open attachments or download any files from suspicious emails or SMS. myID will never send an unsolicited SMS that contains a hyperlink.
